Improv school

IMPROV CLASSES ONLINE

We are happy to present our interactive Online classes! (HERE you can find our „real life“ impro classes - once they start up again)

5-6 times, always on the same week day, you can meet online in small groups to take an improv class. All you need is a computer, a webcam and a microphone. You will receive more info about the tech side after signing up for a class.

Keep checking our website or Facebook site for more updates, as we will continue adding classes.

Taster Class

Class description

If you've always wanted to try out improvisation, then this Taster class is a good start. Afterwards, you can continue with a beginners class.

And this is what you can expect: Everyone is at their place. The computer/laptop is charged. Internet connection stable. You have some space around you, light, so the others can see you. Nobody at home to interrupt you in the next 1,5 hours. Webcam, microphone and speaker of your computer are activated and then you click on the link, which we will send you. The first time when you do that, you'll have to download and install the software that pops up automatically (its really simple!) and then you automatically see yourself, your instructor and classmates. In the beginning you will learn the possibilities of playing online, the tech etc, and then you'll dive right into the playing, improvising, being present and with each other. Stories develop, imaginary places, characters, delightful playing. 90 minutes of diving into the impro world to come back out refreshed.

Listening and acceptance

Listening and accepting our partner's offers is hard enough on stage and even tougher over the internet!
This class focusses us into slowing down and reacting to our partners clearly and efficiently. Heighten the story at a pace you and your partner are comfortable with. We will also include some exercises to get us up on our feet and getting a bit more physical than just sitting in our chairs.
This course will cover some strategies at being connected to our partners, even if we are in a different city than they are.

We were soooooo excited to meet John – he was invited to this year's festival which ended up being one of Corona's first victims, and he was supposed to teach and perform there. Lee recommended him to us as being a smart and funny performer, and we think his approach to creating space and awareness for matters of social justice within impro is so important in this world of today, that we definitely wanted to add him to our new virtual Improschool roster.
John is an improviser from Minneapolis who is the Director of Diversity at HUGE Theatre, performs at Blackout Improv and concentrates on making improv inclusive and welcoming to all people especially the underrepresented folks. We are glad that he agreed to share his experience in this class at our school!

Performing with a Purpose
This course speaks directly to those who want to have an in-depth conversation/ create space for crafting performances to directly encounter social justice issues. We will discuss the need for both caution and bravery, the importance of trust and sensitivity, and challenge attendees to expand their understanding of what serves as a "social justice" performance. This course will engage attendees in how to manage both the delicate nature of sensitive topics and the brutality of truth with honesty, creativity, and freedom, all while being your hilarious self. From the silly to the serious, we will learn to express ourselves safely to a public who is feeling uncertain of their own safety.

TRIGGER AND CONTENT WARNING: this class is based on scenes when you find yourself dealing with topics of race or socially and politically charged situations - which means it will include discussions and scenes dealing with race, gender* and other very personally sensitive areas and how to move forward thoughtfully, respectfully and meaningfully when you find yourself there.

Jacob is another of our longtime companions, who continues to inspire us and amazes us with his diverse and complex play. We take no responsibility, that the hotel room assignments at our festival have anything to do with his move to Europe and the fact that he is now living and working in Graz, Austria with the love of his life. But that's a different story!
Jacob performs and teaches impro for more than 30 years. He was the Artistic Director of the legendary Rapid Fire Theatre in Edmonton and is a master of storytelling, character work and, well, basically everything. Anyone who has seen his impro solo „Game of Death“ is probably still slack-jawed. Don’t hesitate for a second, book this class now before it’s too late.

On Location
Improvisers have a superpower: they can teleport themselves, and anyone in their presence, anywhere. When we gather, the power of suggestion allows us to create new places, and imagine what happens there. But lately, there has been much less assembly; the collective imagination has not exercised in a while. Using photos and paintings as inspiration, we will collaborate to create the active escapism we crave. Images open up to reveal the characters, symbols and stories within. In this workshop, we will travel (not really). We will finally get out of the house, and go somewhere new (so to speak).

If there is one person, who was has inspired us Gorillas to exist for such a long time, then it is Randy. He opened our eyes, hearts and dreams to go beyond everything we thought we knew about improvisation in the late 90’s. He let us experience what creativity is, how to let it linger and how to shoo it away. Randy keeps bringing up the question, why people go into the theatre. Maybe we would have found an answer with him in our rehearsals in March, if Corona hadn't stopped us.

Randy, founding member and Artistic Director of unexpected productions in Seattle since 1988, was a direct student of Del Close (one of the founders of one of the three big North American improv streams besides Keith Johnstone and Viola Spolin, and inventor of the „Harold“). Randy has invented many longforms himself and developed them with performers from all over the world. He performs, teaches and directs worldwide. He writes about myths, religion and psychology, and one of his books „Moment“, was published in German and is highly recommended, much like this workshop:

Spontaneous Myth

Spontaneous storytelling is a place where mythic thinking and archetypal images are allowed to live. The myths and images of the imagination arise from the emptiness in improvisation. We have to rely on each other, or we will fail. Improvisation uses image to connect with story and archetype. Images from the imagination are allowed to breathe and the archetypes allowed to live.

The workshop will focus on the creation and use of images to invoke ancient stories as well as the ones emerging today. What was happening thousands of years ago can influence what happened today. We are living myth. Through the use of image work, ritual, personal storytelling we will try to create a safe space to explore the stories that touch us at our cores. We will “get out of our skins” and learn to about the honesty of play. We will use our dream images to create plays. It will be hard work and a high level of risk will be involved.

Yuri is one of Japan's most experienced improvisers. She is a passionate, energetic performer and teacher, who is incredibly open-hearted and communicative and such a cheerful soul that her sheer presence always made us smile. As so many of our international teacher friends, we met her at a festival and still remember the nights filled with laughter and dancing that we shared. Yuri has been working in improvisation as an actress, director and teacher for more than 24 years, has published 4 books about improvisation & voice training and is currently completing a PhD at Tokyo University. Her research topic is improvisation theatre and acting by Cognitive Science and Physical science point of view. For our online classes, she will focus on the possibilities that lie in the medium of online improvisation with you.

Constraints create creativity

Over these five lessons we will explore the freedoms and restraints of online improvisation. The camera eye is a potentially expansive tool for the improvisor. Framing - long shot, mid-shot, close-up — is all in the hands of the actor. Also exit and entry have dramatic narrative possibilities. Working with others in their frames simultaneously on the digital screen is an exciting opportunity. Learn how to adapt your improv intelligence to the limits of the picture frame in creating compelling and emotional online.

Maja! A performer full of poetry, tranquility and power. We met her 17 years ago at a festival in the US, and even then it was clear that we've encountered a true artist, who is now rightly one of the world's best performers.
We are now regularly and passionately working together with her on our European projects and do not want to miss her wisdom and warmth. Maja is poetic and political, empathic and analytical. Her art is always looking for the connection to the world, to current events, without becoming abstract or intellectual, but on the contrary, always creating touching theatre events. We are still planning to have her directing us Gorillas in a new project this fall.
We are so happy to be sending her directly into your living rooms, home offices, digital impro space as an instructor of our improschool.

Playful journeys from personal to performative

The lockdown situation we find ourselves in sometimes feels too big and too new to be able to speak about it or create from it. Many times it takes away the joy for creation, it erases the inspiration, it makes us think no artistic or philosophical output can really grab it and offer something as important as the everyday feelings and realizations we are living. We feel the world changing within our bodies, but we are lacking the right channel to express or the right game to create a playful distance with which we could explore what is happening to us more precisely.

This workshop focuses on finding ways of transforming everyday personal situations, feelings, thoughts and experiences into performative material. It is dealing with the overall societal and political situation but not from the grand theoretical view and also not from specifically outstanding personal events. It is creating play and finding ways of reprocessing life artistically by using whatever there is in this very moment. Be it the exact room where I am, the first object next to my hands, the view out of my window, the level of tiredness I feel today, the frustration with too much online life, the snack I just had, the texture of the voices on the speakers, the detailed frame I capture on my computer camera in this very moment. By using various tools, games and scores the participants are creating strong performative material that is personal though not private. This process creates a playful distance to the personal source and therefore more space to develop relations to it. At the same time it offers the audience a fertile ground to connect with the content since the material vibrates strongly with their own lives. An enriching process for both the performer and the audience, in our online course case even for both the performer and the observer within the same person.

The workshop also approaches the medium playfully and exploratively. Zooming is not a possibility to do whatever we usually do in a theatre venue or a rehearsal studio, only that now we are by coincidence at home. It is limiting on one hand and opening options on the other hand. Let's dive into the medium and see how it reshapes us and how we can play with it.

The logic of the illogical

Improvisation, like any other form of story telling, does not have to stick to reality as we know it. we can create different times and places and portray characters who are not from this world. however, those places and characters are not randomly different. they have their own internal logic and reason. it’s just different than ours.
this class will focus on creating unrealistic stories in a realistic way. it will help you to find order in chaos and logic in imaginary realms .
we will create alternative realities and challenge ourselves to play with the alternative structures that hold them.
it will be a trip of the imagination in an act of creation.
